What to Expect on Your First Tattoo Appointment
Getting your first tattoo is a milestone — and knowing what happens when you walk through the studio door makes the whole experience far more enjoyable. At Teddington Ink we've guided hundreds of first-timers through the process, and we want you to feel relaxed and informed before your session.
1. The consultation and stencil
Every appointment starts with a conversation. Your artist will discuss your design — size, placement, style — and look at any reference images you've brought. If you have a rough idea rather than a final design, that's fine; a good artist will help you refine it. Once the design is agreed, a stencil is applied to your skin so you can see exactly where it sits before anything permanent happens. Take your time here — adjustments are much easier at this stage.
2. Setting up the workstation
Before the needle touches your skin, your artist will prepare a fully sterile setup. Single-use needles, fresh ink caps, and clean gloves are standard at every professional studio. The skin will be cleaned and shaved if needed. This is a good moment to get comfortable, mention any anxieties, and ask any last questions — there's no rush.
3. The tattooing itself
Most first-timers find the sensation less painful than expected — it's usually described as a scratching or warming feeling rather than sharp pain. How comfortable you are depends heavily on placement: fleshier areas like the upper arm or thigh tend to be much easier than bony spots. Breathe steadily, stay as still as you can, and let your artist know if you need a short break — they'll check in with you throughout.
4. Finishing up and aftercare
Once the tattoo is complete, your artist will clean the area, apply a thin layer of aftercare balm, and cover it with a bandage or protective film. They'll walk you through exactly how to care for your tattoo over the coming days — and this genuinely matters. Good aftercare is what keeps your tattoo looking sharp for years to come. Before you leave, take a good look. That mix of excitement and disbelief is completely normal.
