Piercing Healing Timeline: What to Expect Week by Week
From tender to totally healed — here’s what to expect at every stage.

🗓 Week 1: Fresh & Tender
Your piercing will likely be red, swollen, and a bit tender. That’s totally normal. You might see a little bleeding, especially in the first 24 hours. Stick to the basics:
- Wash your hands before touching it
- Clean with sterile saline twice a day
- No twisting or playing with the jewellery
🔔 Pro tip: Sleeping on your new piercing can slow healing — switch up your pillow side if you need to.
🗓 Weeks 2–3: The Itchy Stage
Swelling starts to go down, and you might feel some itchiness or tightness — signs that healing is underway.
What to expect:
- Minor crusties (don’t pick!)
- Less pain, but still sensitive
- Resist the urge to change your jewellery too early
🗓 Weeks 4–6: Settling In
The surface may look fine, but don’t be fooled — your body is still doing deep healing underneath. Stick to your cleaning routine and avoid:
- Sleeping directly on it
- Swimming in pools or hot tubs
- Over-cleaning (yes, that’s a thing!)
🗓 Weeks 6–12: Healing or Healed (Depending on Placement)
Lobe piercings? You’re likely healed. Cartilage, nostrils, and others? Still going.
This is when:
- You might consider a jewellery change (with pro help)
- You’ll notice improved comfort and flexibility
- Aftercare is still important — don’t stop too soon
🔒 Important: Some piercings (like navels or industrials) take 6–12 months. Be patient!
🚨 Signs Something’s Off
If you notice any of these, get in touch with your piercer ASAP:
- Pus or yellow/green discharge
- Extreme swelling or heat
- Throbbing pain that gets worse over time
